Unexpected and Unwanted Turns

September 19, 2021 | Rev. Dr. Chris J. Hayes

Passage: Jonah 3:1-10

Welcome to Worship. Today Rev. Dr. Chris J. Hayes continues looking at the story of Jonah, in part three of the series "Jonah’s Crazy Journey: Unexpected and Unwanted Turns." Like Jonah, we often do not want the same things that God wants, and it’s okay to admit that. It is hard to love enemies, humble ourselves before those we don’t agree with and proclaim God’s unconditional love by loving even those people we really do not want to love. Also, like Jonah, it’s a struggle for us to get over our own desires in order to follow God’s – but it’s a key component to following Christ and making this world more like what God desires it to be.

Series Information

One of the greatest purposes of Holy Scripture is to show us stories about God’s people that we can learn from throughout history. Jonah was on a journey of faith and life just like each and every one of us. His journey was a bit more dramatic, but his struggles, triumphs, and attitude along the journey gives us great insight into how we should live, and often insight into how we should not live, as we strive to be faithful followers of God’s love.
